Q: harvard business case starlix solution?
A: That is not published on the Web
Q: why would my husband’s glucose level be normal 2 hours after eating and then high right before the next meal?
my husband has very unstable readings. The highest he has been , that we know of is 235. However sometimes within an hour of eating he is in the normal range- which makes us happy- and then before his next meal , or bedtime, he checks at it can be around 190 or more. What can cause this, and do you have any suggestions? He is only Starlix and cinnamon tabs. The cinnamon tabs have helped with his after meal readings.
A: Often times, going too long without eating, or allowing yourself to get too hungry, your liver dumps glucose in your system. This also happens when you get up in the morning. The reason this happens in the morning is to get your body moving, and at other times, it’s a defense mechanism against starvation. It’s like energy in storage just in case. What can help is to make sure that your hubby is not waiting too long to eat, that he is eating longer-lasting carbs, and that he is eating snacks and smaller meals, eating more often throughout the day.
I eat usually about 4 meals a day:
~ breakfast around 9:30 or sooner, depending on how hungry I am
~ lunch around noon or so, usually before I go to work or right as I start work
~ a meal around 4:00 or so, not too large usually
~ another meal around 9:30 -10:00, after I’ve gotten home from work and while I’m still quite awake.
I eat snacks throughout th day as needed, maybe a little bite here and there. I prefer low carb protein bars. The protein helps the carbs last longer and are great for a little boost between meals as well. Hope this helps!
Q: I’m under huge stress lately and can’t get my blood sugar under control?
I’m maintaining a good diet and getting exercises but my numbers are all over the map. Anybody have any tips.
I’m type 2 using Starlix
A: I understand…when I went through a divorce a few years ago I couldn’t control my BG’s for anything. The best thing you can do is check your BG frequently, at least 4x/day. Correct with a snack if you’re low or a brisk walk if you’re high. Do some deep breathing exercises 3x/day and try to think soothing, positive thoughts. If you work with a computer, put reminders on your Outlook to do your meditation and check your BG’s. It will help a lot.
Q: Anyone use Januvia for type 2?
I am taking Starlix now but (due to stress) can’t keep in controll so I have been given Januvia to test drive. Is there anything that I should know? good or bad any and all feedback is appreciated.
A: You can overcome your Diabetes2

Q: Sleeping trouble, tiredness. Type 2?
My boyfriend has had type 2 diabetes for about 5 years. He takes metformin and starlix, and is pretty good with his diet.
He has terrible trouble sleeping, and can get very tired. He doesn’t really put it down to his diabetes (he cared for his late wife for several years, and got used to being up regularly in the night) but I have heard that diabetes can cause insomnia, and I want him to look into some natural sleep treatments. Over the last 6 months, his sleeping problems have got worse, and at his last diabetes review, the doctor increased his metfomin dose slightly.
He isn’t really overweight, although the doctor advised he lose half a stone just to keep tabs on things.
Does anyone take sleeping supplements or could suggest anything?
A: My suggestion would be to do what works for me. Walk about 2 to 3 miles at least two hours before bed. Take one cap of valerian root and one of GABA 1/2 hour before bed. This has helped quite a bit. I have fibromyalgia, so I need all the quality sleep I can muster.
In addition to the above, which is mostly for sleep, he might want to review what I’ve done to get off the Metformin. Since doing so, many health aspects have returned to nearly normal. Here’s my blog on that:

Q: why is my husband’s blood suger level not dropping below 200?
When my husband first was diagnosed with diabetes about a year ago- the doc put him on STARLIX- he was doing really well with his levels- and the last few weeks, diet has not changed- his levels are not below 200- and this morning it hit 300. He cannot exercise due to being disabled from injuries at work- however he was not exercising a year ago either.
thanks for all the answers so far- and especially sweetipye. we have been under some stress with family these last few weeks- he asked his doc to switch meds and she said he would have to take some blood tests first- would anyone recommend him seeing an endocronologist? not sure of spelling
A: Adore Him, YES YES YES. get a referal to an Endocrynologist. That is a Diabetic Specialist. They will see that he is in the best care he can get for his Diabetis. Has your husband changed spots for his injections> sometimes, if you inject the same places all the time, scar tissue builds up and the insulin does not absorb as well. Try to go to an injection site that does not have as much fatty tissue. The inner thigh or the back of the arm. I dont know what he is on now, but dont take advice for your husbands health from a site like this. Go to your doctor and get the referal. Do not play and wonder with Diabetis. Harsh reality is, it can kill him. If you have to, take him to emergency room and tell them that his levels have not dropped under the 200 mark and that you cant get it to go down. they will hook him up with and Endo. there. Do not wait, do not hesitate, do not take “what should I do?” advice on a play site like this. I know some people find good answers on here, but EVERY PERSON IS DIFFERENT. What works for them, could kill your husband. What works for your husband may not work for anyone else. God Bless. Get it taken care of now. I was on here a week ago and someone told you about an Endo Dr. why have you waited? Diabetis is NOT a disease to be played with or put off or just sit and wonder, well what should I do. Do it NOW. His (my hubby) blood sugar was 982 last time he was in hospital. they put him on an insulin drip for 7 days and was still 423 when I took him home.
Q: Starix is kicking my ASS?
Hi All, I have been taking starlix and insulin (lantus) for the last 5 days. On days 1 and 2 I felt sick to my stomach and a little groggy upon waking up. Then day 3 and 4 I felt great. Last night I wanted to see how well starlix worked its carbs against 2 slices of sausage pizza with extra cheese. Well first off I got so filled up on 2 slices that I immediately had to lie down. I felt as though my sugar was shooting through the roof. I checked my glucose 2 hours after and it was 246. Anyway the side effects I had tonight were less then pleasant and I thought I might end up in the ER. Nausea, light headed, palpitations. I do feel much better when I have a light meal on starlix rather then filling up to the gill.
I was so messed up I was very weak and tired and could barley get off the bed.
Anyway, do these symptoms ever go away. I dont think I can take the nausea much longer? also does that metalic taste ever go away. I don’t like that taste in my mouth all day.
Thanks, Joe
A: In clinical trials, approximately 2400 patients with Type 2 diabetes were treated with Starlix® (nateglinide). Of these, approximately 1200 patients were treated for 6 months or longer and approximately 190 patients for one year or longer.
Hypoglycemia was relatively uncommon in all treatment arms of the clinical trials. Only 0.3% of Starlix patients discontinued due to hypoglycemia. Gastrointestinal symptoms, especially diarrhea and nausea, were no more common in patients using the combination of Starlix and metformin than in patients receiving metformin alone. The following table lists events that occurred more frequently in Starlix patients than placebo patients in controlled clinical trials
Starlix
(nateglinide) 3 hrs 60 – 120 mg
before each meal 2 – 3
Side Effects: low blood sugar, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, muscle aches, upper respiratory infection, cold and flu like symptoms, headache, joint aches, and back pain
Contraindications: Type 1 diabetes, liver disease
I hope you are not type one. If you are change doctors now!
Also quit taking this drug. Get another. Its killing you!!
Starlix and insulin do not mix well.
Q: New Lantus user – few questions?
I saw the endro doc for the first time because my waking sugars were 150 and my sugars through the day were 180-290. I just felt I needed a new treatment plan. So the endro puts me on Lantus 10ius before bed and a combo of starlix 120mg to take with every meal to help with things. So I was excited about the new regimen. my sugars have been the following so far.
After taking the starlix it was -
7:35 pm (just after dinner) 215
9pm (1 1/2 hours after dinner) 230
9:30 – 244
9:45 – I took 10ius of lantus
1:30am – 158
3:30am – 153
5:15am – 125
I am very hungry right now and want to eat but I want to get a good fasting reading. However since I have not eaten anything since 7:30pm I guess 5:15 is almost a good 10 hours.
I feel really spacey and a little light headed and one of the questions I have is do you think its because I have had no food in my stomach for 10 hours or that 125 is kinda of low for me and I am just feeling side effects from the lantus.
Thanks
I did fix my hunger craving with a banana but here it is 12pm and I feel full, still spacey and a little nausea. Not sure if its the insulin or the oral meds. Right now my sugar is only 144 with is really good but I do have to eat regardless. I was also feeling somewhat weak at my extrmities (arms and legs) and I have a little bit of a sore throat. maybe I am getting sick.
Yes I have the solostar injector. Very nice indeed.
A: Yeah!! you are spacey from the number of hours without food and the new low glucose number you are not used to.
Things to remember when taking Lantus!!!
1. Take it at the same hour every day. Set an hour sometime during the day, and this is your injection time. Don’t vary it by much one way or the other. It works best if taken exactly at the same time every day. (I take my injection at 6 AM because that is the one stable point in my day)
2. Lantus has a tendency to burn if injected when cold or even a bit colder than body temp!!
3. Lantus usually works for about 24 hours!!
4. Eat regularly scheduled meals!!! balance of one third each fats, carbs and proteins. (I try to keep my daily grams of carb under 100)
I check my glucose level immediately on getting up!! Then check it again at 6 just before injecting. Fasting readings don’t mean much!! The random readings during the day tell more!!
Have you got the new SoloStar injector?? rather than the vial and syringes?? That is what I want when I go for checkup and renew Rx on my Lantus!!!
I eat on the hour every 3 to 4 hours during the day. Some days I get off schedule, but mostly stick rather rigorously to a tight schedule.
Much good luck to you. Email me if you like with more questions on Lantus!
Q: How do I handle food as a diabetic when the family LOVES to eat?
I am a type 2 diabetic, on Insulin, glucophage, and starlix. My sugars are only good when I strictly watch my diet and I really feel good then. But my husband, son, and two grown daughters all love food and I do too unfortunately! How can I convince my daughters specifically that feeding me isn’t love, that it can kill me or worse make me a permanently handicapped person? How can I RESIST eating what makes everyone so, so happy? ‘Just say no’ isn’t working–I need a technique that gives me strength in the heat of the moment not to ‘indulge’ when everyone is. Help…………………!
A: Which do you love more, your life or your taste buds?
I watched helplessly as my mother slowly went downhill with heart attacks, bypass surgery, strokes, etc. until she ended up in a nursing home with dementia and finally died. Her doctors were absolutely useless. Since then, I vowed that if I ever became diabetic, I would learn as much as I could about the disease. Treating diabetes is not that hard. I’ve put together tons of useful information including a page on the psychology of eating on my website. You can do your family and yourself a favor by visiting these pages:
