Q: is it ok to take lantus 2 hours early?
my husband has just started on insulin.he takes lantus solar star once a day 14 units.we have church tomorrow and instead of taking all his stuff with him he is wondering if he can take it before we leave like 2 hours early.i can’t find anything about it online.thank you!

A: Lantus is a BASAL insulin. It is not taken like regular insulin.

Most doctors recommend taking Lantus first thing in the morning, just before breakfast. It then works for you all day.

Some recent studies have shown that Lantus works best if the dosage is split between two injections — one first thing in the morning, one 12-14 hours later.

REGULAR insulin is taken just before meals — no more than 15 minutes before. Regular insulin is called a BOLUS insulin, and works differently from Lantus. Bolus insulin is designed to work quickly — within 15-30 minutes. This action helps reduced the blood sugar “spike” that occurs immediately after you start to eat. Since bolus insulin take about 15 minutes to start to work, you need to time the injections according to your meal – no more than 15 minutes early or late, compared to the first bite you take.

It sounds like your husband should take his Lantus before you leave the house, and leave the pen at home, but you should consult with your doctor for a better explanation.

And ask the doctor about “splitting” the dosage. Personally, I swear by that. My blood sugars dropped to normal within 3 days when I started “splitting” the dosage, and my morning “highs” went away.

But as always, check with the doctor.

Q: Is there a group of (over 25) Type I Diabetics online?
Eli Lilly has abandoned the Lente dependent people. Is there a way we can organize a voice that can be heard to provide a 12-hour alternative to Lantus? Does anyone know of research or insulins that are being tested to respond to this need? In December, we will be out of luck so we need to be doing something NOW.

A: Start a Yahoo Group.

Go to the yahoo groups page at http://groups.yahoo.com/

On the type right of the page, you will see ‘Start your own Group’

Then you can publicise it by asking on Yahoo Answers if anyone wants to join.
You can also search the web for other places to write to to find members.

A heading like
A CURE FOR DIABETES will attract people.

It should be publicising a cure that has been around for a long time now, but is suppressed by the medical industry, because there’s no profit in it.

Take a look at this page.

Diabetes

All diabetics have a common fluke parasite, Eurytrema pancreaticum, the pancreatic fluke of cattle, in their own pancreas. It seems likely that we get it from cattle, repeatedly, by eating their meat or dairy products in a raw state. It is not hard to kill with a zapper but because of its infective stages in our food supply we can immediately be reinfected.

Eurytrema will not settle and multiply in our pancreas without the presence of wood alcohol (methanol). Methanol pollution pervades our food supply — it is found in processed food including bottled water, artificial sweetener, soda pop, baby formula and powdered drinks of all kinds including health food varieties. I presume wood alcohol is used to wash equipment used in manufacturing. If your child has diabetes, use nothing out of a can, package or bottle except regular milk, and no processed foods.

Q: What is a normal insulin dosage for cats?
Ok, last question I promise [I sure with yahoo would make more of a threaded system to keep similar questions and followups in order].

I am starting my cat on 1 unit of Lantus insulin tomorrow morning, once a day. I have been looking online about noticing the signs of hypoglycemia and am just concerned that if I start it over the weekend that the vet won’t be open in case something bad happens.

There are a few types of insulin and I can’t really find a good answer for a cat’s dosage online. I was wondering if anyone that is giving their cat insulin [hopefully Lantus] could tell me how much they give their cat a day? Is 1 unit/once daily a lot or a little?

If it’s on the lower side, I’d feel more comfortable starting it over the weekend. But if this is a mid or higher dosage than maybe I’ll wait until monday. thank you all [again!] for the help with this. so very much appreciated.

A: Hi, I have a diabetic cat currently on Lantus. He gets 5 units twice a day, so, I’d say 1 unit once a day is low! He should be fine. The vet told us to keep a bottle of Karo syrup on hand in case the cat ever has a problem. If the cat gets weak or can’t stand up, you are supposed to rub it on their gums. Our guy had this happen once & we used this & thank goodness he was fine. There really isn’t any normal insulin dose, we have to take him into the vet to check his levels & then they adjust the dose. Good luck! It’s not really that difficult to manage… the cat doesn’t mind getting the shots at all.

Q: My husband fell asleep and too his Lantus 7 hours late…?
My husband takes a 24 hour dose of Lantus (type 1 diabetes) at 12am everyday. Last night we fell asleep early, he woke up and a little panicked took a full 24 hour dose 7 hours late (7am) The only thing I can find online is what he should have done which is skip the shot entirely and correct highs with his Humulog (meal time insulin) throughout the day. The only thing we can think of doing is adjusting 1 hour at a time back to the normal time. (Doing it 1 hour earlier each night until back on track) I wish it were possible to just keep doing it in the morning but my husband cannot function in the morning lol. If anyone has any ideas they would be very welcome. My husband has been diabetic for nearly 20 years (we have been together for 11 of those) and this is the first time this has ever happened.
Wow! I can’t thank you all enough for all of your answers. Thank you so much! We spoke to his endocrinologist today and he is switching back to the normal time (it works for him) Since everyone was so awesome I am choosing the glucose meter link at the best, because we have certainly been in the situation of needing help with this disease financially. Thank you all again so much!

A: If any of you need a new glucose meter, my sister just got one for free. A nurse at her doctors office told her about a company that is giving them away to help out people that need help. You can visit their website here to see if you qualify. http://ow.ly/1ruQH
