Q: What is the difference between Humulin and Humalog?
Are these two types of insulin very different?
A: Both of the above are incorrect. Here is a more comprehensive chart of insulin types:
RAPID ACTING: (3 times/day)
Humalog
Novolog
Apidra
SHORT ACTING:
Regular Insulin
Humulin R
Novolin R
MEDIUM ACTING: (2 times/day)
NPH Insulin
Humulin N or L
Novolin N or L
LONG ACTING: (once a day)
Lantus
Levemir
Along with these there are a variety of premixed insulin types available. These premixes include a rapid/short acting insulin along with a medium/long acting one.
NPH & Regular:
Novolin 70/30
Humuiln 70/30
Humulin 50/50
Lispro-Lispro Protamine:
Humalog Mix 75/25
Aspart-Aspart Protamine:
Novolog Mix 70/30

Therefore, the differences between Humalog and Humulin are many. Humalog is a rapid acting insulin. Humulin can be either rapid or medium depending upon whether it is R or N. Humalog is dosed three times a day with meals. Humulin N is usually dosed twice a day or maybe once a day if newly diagnosed.
Overall, insulin dosing is very complex and can become quite complicated. It is important to follow the schedule that was set by the doctor.
Q: If a patient glucose level is 755 and given 10 units of Humulin IV. What is her glucose level ?
What is her glucose level after she received the insulin?
A: The drop in blood glucose level, measured in milligrams per deciliter (mg/dl), caused by each unit of insulin taken. Knowing their insulin sensitivity factor can help people with Type 1 diabetes to determine the dose of short-acting or rapid-acting insulin to take.
Health-care professionals use the “1500 rule” to calculate insulin sensitivity factor for people who use Regular (short-acting) insulin. The 1500 rule works as follows: Divide 1500 by the total daily dose of Regular insulin, in units. For example, if a person’s total daily dose is 30 units of Regular insulin, his insulin sensitivity factor would be 50 (1500 ÷ 30). So one unit of Regular insulin would be estimated to lower his blood glucose by 50 mg/dl.
Health-care professionals use the “1800 rule” to calculate insulin sensitivity factor for people who use the rapid-acting insulin analogs lispro (brand name Humalog), aspart (NovoLog), and glulisine (Apidra). This is done by dividing 1800 by the total daily dose of rapid-acting insulin. If the total daily insulin dose is 40 units, the insulin sensitivity factor would be 1800 divided by 40, or 45.
Insulin sensitivity factor can be calculated only for people with Type 1 diabetes. It cannot be calculated reliably for people with Type 2 diabetes, whose pancreases often still make some insulin and who have varying degrees of insulin resistance.
Q: what’s the difference between novilin insulin & humulin insulin?
A: Same thing. Novolin is the name of the drug, humulin is simply one of its brand names.
Q: My girlfriend is 6 months pregnant and has diabetes and is on 1 shot daily of humulin and 1000 mg of metformin?
what can she do to lower her blood sugar if it rises and shes already taken her medications for the day?
A: Hi
You should call the doctor if her blood sugar isn’t under control, sooner rather than later. A lot of things could be making her blood sugar fluctuate. Is she eating properly and exercising?
I had gestational diabetes with my youngest child and the only way I could get my blood sugar under control was on a low carb diet. A lot of doctors don’t agree with it but it worked for me. There is a diabetes book by a Dr. Bernstein, Google it. It has been recommended to me by many other diabetics. Good luck to both of you, and congratulations on your upcoming arrival!
Q: How much does one unit of Humulin 70/30 cancel, correct or reduce in points.?
Am 39 , new to insulin , scores are still in the high 200’s. Am taking 30 units after each meal. Am 5′3″, latin , and pretty sendentary in activity and weigh 184.
Need help in determining how much to take by my score. Right now if my score is like 270, I take 30units and about 6 hours later i check again and if high , l take another dose. l always check before taking dosages . Am still high for thing in the morning. l need help to figure out dosages depending on my score … thank you in advance for you help…
A: The way a person reacts to insulin is dependent on their level of insulin resistance, their food intake, and the amount of excercise they get.
You have to experiment and find the dosage that is needed for you.
The way to accomplish that is to monitor your blood sugar level before you take the insulin and once the insulin has had time to act.
Eventually you will be able to “quesstimate” fairly accurately what your insulin requirements are.
Q: What’s the difference in Humulin R and Humalog?
I just started on Lantus two days ago..My doctor mentioned Humalog to me but for now I’m still taking Regular a couple of times a day. My sugars are way too high. The doctor just increased my Lantus again today. Thanks..
Thank you. Does Humalog work better for most people?
Thank you all.
A: I have not used Regular insulin since Humalog became available years ago (Lantus is great but this is a basal or long acting insulin). Regular is variable in onset and duration and typically too slow in onset for proper prandial (post meal) gluocse control. Humalog and Novalog are the 1st truly rapid acting insulins – both of which are available in pen systems that are much preferred by all – and the use of Regular is no longer appropriate.
Q: How is novolin different from humulin ?
A: Both are human derevatives. They are just different brands.
Q: does humulin 100 spoil if the refrigerator goes out?
i keep up to 5 bottles of Insulin ( Humulin 100) in our fridge but the temperature is erratic, can my insulin spoil if the fridge loses power?
A: depends for how long. If the fridge loses power don’t open the door because it will stay colder longer. If the temperature when too high for too long then you would need to use it within a week
Q: How do you pronounce Humalog and Humulin, Lantus?
how do you pronounce these drugs?
A: Pronunciation [hyoo-myuh-lin or, often, yoo-] Show IPA
Pharmacology, Trademark. a brand of human insulin produced by genetically engineered bacteria

Q: Doc upped my insulin intake to 80 units of Humulin every 24 hours. This makes my skin burn. Is this normal?
I am taking 40 units of Humulin every 12 hours (total of 80 units per 24 hours, via 2 injections daily). I also take Humalog now and then. Ever since my doctor upped my insulin intake to 80 units per day, I get this weird burning sensation all over my body (surface of skin). It hurts like the dickens, and it makes life unbearable at times! It makes walking difficult because my clothes rub up against my skin and irritate it that much more. It’s hard to sleep because the covers, again, irritate my skin. To put it in perspective, it feels like a sun burn. Is this a normal side effect / reaction to the insulin, or is this a type of neuropathy? (As well, when my doctor placed me on daily injections of Lantus, I developed the same skin irritation, but it was worsened by severe hot and cold flashes, nervousness, and excessive sweating. Every other symptom but the skin irritation disappeared after I switched back to Humulin; however, the burning is driving me crazy!) Any advice? Help! Thanks.
A: My friend you might have allergic reactions. Try levemir.. I switched to levemir and its only once a day. Talk to your endocrinologist ASAP. this insulin is new and it has been changing the lives of many in a very good way.
Q: Type 2 diabetes use Humulin 70/30 with reading of 250 when should I do another reading and when should I do?
another injection.
A: Most doctors have already given advice to their patients on what to do when their blood glucose levels run high. Most of the time, this involves using regular insulin on a sliding scale. If you do not have this type of insulin, you need to access your doctor by calling his clinic – there is usually an emergency phone number that you can access a doctor on call from his clinic. You might even be lucky enough that your own doctor happens to be on call tonight. Get advice from a medical professional because of the type of insulin that you use.
Q: is humulin 70/30 considered to be a combination drug? and why is augmentin to be a combination drug?
This is a yes or no question…..I have the internet so I know what is in it, but I want to know if they are combination drugs. This is for school, and I have a 4.0 to keep for two more months. K thanks
A: Humulin 70/30 is a mixture of 70% Human Insulin Isophane Suspension and 30% Human Insulin Injection (rDNA origin). It is an intermediate-acting insulin combined with the more rapid onset of action of Regular human insulin.
Augmentin is a combination of the antibiotic amoxicillin and the beta-lactamase inhibitor clavulanate potassium.
Q: Lilly is discontinuing the production of humulin Lente U100 rDNA origin, zinc suspension which do i use now?
i am diabetic and have been using lilly lente u100 rDNA origin zinc suspension, and it has been okay for me. Now the production will be discontinued by the manufacturers. I am worried over a good replacement. I would like to know which other insulin, with the same properties as Lente humulin that will be equally okay for my use, and readily available in the market. I am in Africa, though i have contacts in the US that can procure the products for me, but not before i tell them exactly what i want them to buy for me.
Is Lilly the only manufacturer that produces humulin insulin? which other manufacturers does, and what is the name of their product that can easily fit into the class of the one that Lilly is phasing out. Better still, is there another product from Lilly that is the same with the one that is being discontinued. I have been diabetic since 10 years now and i am 40 years old. wise me up please.
A: I really think this is a question for your doctor….you know, the one who PRESCRIBES the insulin!!!
Q: what is the difference between humulin 70/30 and novulin 70/30?
can novulin be used in place of humulin?
A: They are generally used together. Novulin is a fast acting insulin used just before a meal. Humulin is slow acting and is used to maintain a proper blood glucose level throughout the day.
However, Novulin used in an insulin pump is generally used by itself. A very small dose is given all day to maintain blood glucose, and a larger dose is administered before a meal.
Now that I think about it, I could be wrong as the 70/30 means they are probably mixtures of some kind. If I were to guess i’d say that Humulin 70/30 is 70% Humulin and Novulin 70/30 is 70% Novulin.
