Q: I just found out my cat has diabetes. The insulin is way expensive along with k/d cat food. What r my options?
I called 1800PETMEDS and the guy told me about Humulin n. That is used for dogs. I read online that it’s not really recommended but it is a lot cheaper. I need suggestions and advice please.
K/D cat food threw my vet. $35.00 a case of 24 cans.
Insulin: $130.00 a months worth with needles.
Humulin n: Threw Petmeds: $40.00 that will last 2 months. However may not be the best choice of working medication.
@Ms Ms.Washington
I have two other cats. I had them all eating indoor dry cat food. The cat with diabetes has problems with constipation. I added a can of wet food to there meal at night. Two of them put on wight. The diabetes cat lost a lot of wight. I did not notice the increase in water waste until a month ago. The cats diabetes level is double past a normal cats.

The K/D is because the diabetes is making the kidneys fail.
A: My cat became diabetic 2 and a half years ago, and went into remission almost right away. He hasn’t needed insulin for a really long time. It mostly had to do with diet change. Dry cat food has all kinds of garbage in it that cats don’t need, and because of this, it can make them get diseases like diabetes and renal failure. You don’t have to buy a special diabetic food, my cat went into remission on certain brands of Fancy Feast, (the ones without wheat gluten and have less than 10% carbs.) I also had him on an insulin called Lantus which is expensive, but one of the most likely insulin to cause remission in cats. Please post on this board: http://felinediabetes.com/FDMB/viewforum.php?f=3 The people there are experts on feline diabetes, more so than most vets, and can help you along, and teach you how to test your cat’s blood glucose at home so you can save on vet bills. Diabetes is not a death sentence. My cat is living proof of that. He has a hyperactive thyroid yet, but still is as healthy as can be. He will be 19 this July. If you love your pet, which I’m sure you do, then please take care of him/her. S/he’s depending on you.
