Q: My dog ate 2 45mg actos tablets. Will it harm him?
A: I would certainly get on the phone and call my vet or call an emergency vet. They will advise. Don’t wait any longer. Hope everything turns out ok.
Q: how does actos help in controlling my diabetes?
I just need some info on the tablet that was added to my other meds that i was already taking.
A: Pioglitazone is an anti-diabetic drug (thiazolidinedione-type, also called “glitazones”) used along with a proper diet and exercise program to control high blood sugar in patients with type 2 diabetes (non-insulin-dependent diabetes). It works by helping to restore your body’s proper response to insulin, thereby lowering your blood sugar. Controlling high blood sugar helps prevent kidney damage, blindness, nerve problems, loss of limbs, and sexual function problems. Proper control of diabetes may also lessen your risk of a heart attack or stroke.
Pioglitazone is used either alone or in combination with other anti-diabetic medications (e.g., metformin, sulfonylureas, insulin).
And now the rest of the story:
The “glitazone” diabetes drugs Actos and Avandia may double or triple the risk of broken bones after a year or two of use.
The finding comes from Swiss researchers who analyzed 12 years of data on U.K. diabetes patients. They compared the 1,020 patients who suffered some kind of fracture to 3,728 matched patients who did not break any bones.
Over the course of the study, most of the patients took several diabetes drugs. But those who refilled their Actos or Avandia prescriptions eight times or more — about 12 to 18 months of use — had nearly twice the fracture risk of other patients.
And those who refilled their Actos or Avandia prescriptions 15 times or more — two or more years of treatment — nearly tripled their risk of fracture, found Christophe R. Meier, PhD, head of pharmacoepidemiology research at University Hospital Basel, Switzerland, and colleagues.

Q: anyone have any experience of pioglitazone hydrochloride tablets?
trade name actos it is one of the newer anti diabetic tablets on the market;my g.p. put me on them after i said that stress was driving my sugar high and asked to be signed off and of course she didn’t listen;i feel bad on them and notice that weight gain is one of hte side effects;i wonder if the bad feeling is due to anythign other than too low sugar?
A: I was on 10mg actos and moved up to 30mg actoswithin 3 months, and taken with your diabetic medication such as metaglip, insulin, glucotrol, glucofage?, or whatever, it is supposed to make you more suseptable to your sugar lowering meds. I agree it does mess with you in some ways, but it does help me somewhat, but you may need to be put on a lower dosage (10mg or less) or taken off altogether, get a 2nd doctors opinion.
Q: fish oil and omega 3 and people with diabetes?
is it ok for a diabetic who is on simvastatin, actos, gliburide, 8mg asprin, and lantus insulin to take fish oil tablets? i noticed some weight loss the first week but know i feel bloated and tired all the time.
A: I eat 2 small pieces of steamed fish (250 grams) twice a week.If you eat natural fish whats the need for tablets.
Since people with type 2 diabetes have high levels of fat in their blood, as well as lower levels of HDL (“good”) cholesterol, the findings point to a way for patients to “partially correct” the condition, the authors say. Fatty fish such as salmon and mackerel are also rich in fish oil.
But certain types of fat, including one type of LDL or “bad” cholesterol, were not affected

Q: Is there any connection to the following meds and kindney failure?
My father is a diabetic who has been prescribed the following pills to maintain his insulin and blood sugar; he has recently been diagnosed with acute kidney failure. Bare in mind he has had no previous renal problems or complications. We believe the prescription cocktail he has been taking has something to do with this new discovery. Can anybody tell me if the following medications have been linked to kidney problems/ failure? the medications are: Actos 15MG, Simvastatin 40MG, Aspirin 81MG, Novalin 70/30MG, Rugby Travel Sickness ( Meclizine 25MG),Metformin HCL Tablet 500MG, and he has been taking Fish Oil as well. Please help us to figure out what has caused this sudden development! Thanks In Advance!
Diabetic( Type 2) Male, 50 years old was diagnosed with acute kidney
malfunction. Over the past 3 months patient has developed raised levels in kindney
function, weight gain, dizziness, frequent chest pains, weak joints,
weakness and soreness in the lower body, blurred vision, kidney pains
,and a severe decrease in appetite. Has the following complications
been reported elsewhere in patients using the following prescription
medications?
P.S. My father has recently been taken off the Metformin and his Simvastitin has been doubled from 20MG. These problems were discovered within the past 3-5 months after being on these medications. Are there any links to renal malfunction with these fore-mentioned prescriptions?
A: Diabetes and kidney problems do go hand it hand, however some of the symptoms you have listed can also be side effects for the simvastatin. The link below talks about them.
Keep in my mind that most of us are not qualified to make a diagnosis. Talk to your doc about the statin drug. My fiance was on it and he had to stop because of the side effects.
